“Things here take time and patience, and they’re meant to. There’s dreaming involved, and growing, and trial and error. There are skilled hands of expert purveyors at the helm of every bar of soap, every drop of oil, and there’s wisdom imbued in each product’s story. If something feels expensive here, it’s because these things are rare.” - Flamingo Estate
We've been fans — and stockists — of Flamingo Estate from early on, and can attest that their cult status is no accident. Our whole team are devotees, and for good reason: the products aren't popular by trend alone. Anyone who picks one up can tell they're the real thing.
Recently, we got a personal taste (and smell) of all the good and new things coming from the Flamingo Estate team — and ask any one of us, we've got a lot to say.
The Story
The founder Richard Christiansen's story is a wild one and worth reading little bits and pieces in any one of his books. There's a lot to say about the rise of the company and the ingenuity of its founder, but here are a few favorite details: an Australian-born creative director who ran one of the world's most sought-after agencies. He grew up on a honey farm but beekeeping never really left him was a harbinger for what he would later build. It was a simple habit of gifting honey on set that led, almost accidentally, to discovering the seven-acre Los Angeles estate that would become everything. Oh, and they're the ones who made a tomato candle famous.
The Sentiment
There is so much sentiment and even a little hedonism woven into every scent and product. The rich hand cream was recreated from a formula his mother made from her own garden to keep her hands perpetually soft. A candle was born from a memory of a party in Italy that smelled orange peels, champagne, cigarettes, olive groves, resulting in one of the most romantic scents imaginable.
The history behind each scent is as captivating as the smell itself. Some are photo-realistic, some more conceptual created from a blend of farm and memory —like the Leather Appointment Candle- making it nearly impossible not to be charmed by the story as much as the result.
And it's a brand that does all the right things: regenerative farming, support for local growers, everything is made in California and has the highest quality standards throughout.
The Beauty
These are beautiful, useful things. The farm is intentional in its practices and devoted to the wellness of the land. In turn wild beauty is everywhere. Possilby the crown jewel — and inspiration for many of the bath and body products — is the bathhouse, which left our whole team full of inspiration. Not wanting the soap and water runoff to damage the rose garden below, they set out to create a soap that does no harm. That's the kind of thinking behind everything they make.
